kbuntu hardy heron 8.04 bugs

I installed on my emachines t6420 desktop, 2 gigs of ram, ATI1300 graphics card, the installer failed to recognize my monitor and gave a setting i was not happy with and then offered to download and install a ATI graphics driver, well the result of that was a "out of range" error and of course the system locked up. I got the x system restored by using my kanotix install and then simply copied
my xorg.conf over to kbuntu and then ran kano's install fglrx-debian.sh script which detected my
xorg.conf and proceeded to download and install the ATI driver. I had other errors that were eventually dealt with and i needed to chown wirechief:users /home/wirechief/.ICEauthority in order to restore access to kde.
I do not plan on trying this on my laptop, this problem is reocurring with each release of ubuntu/kbuntu at least the last two releases anyway.
